March 18, 2020
I was hoping all week I would be able to call us back together for this coming Sunday. But as you know, the threat of COVID-19 continues. After consulting with church leaders, I am convinced that our best response continues to be “shelter in place” – avoiding physical contact and looking forward to the day when we can safely gather again to give praise to God “for the things He has done.” We are committed to a week by week evaluation of this course of action for the good of all of us and the community we are a part of.
Here are some “pro-active” things we are working on in the meantime:
1. I have asked our Lay Leader Nathan Reed and our Music Director Lisa Powell to assist me in planning and presenting an “on-line” worship service, hopefully beginning this Sunday at our regular 10:00 am hour. We have moved forward by ordering the necessary technical equipment to make this “happen” and we hope to have it in place by this weekend. More about that as we draw closer to Sunday.
2. I am proposing to engage our youth in what I am tentatively calling a “RRT” (Rapid Response Team) Ministry whereby any of our people, but especially our “at risk” older folk (members or not) could call a number if they have any needs we can help meet (items from the grocery store, prescriptions pick up, or even transportation to the doctor, etc). Members of our youth with access to vehicles would be on rotating “stand-by,” rapidly ready to respond to needs as might be requested. I already have one “volunteer” – my grandson Dillon has agreed to serve. Lisa will be contacting other members of our youth and all will be notified of the numbers to call at various times of the day or evening. Lisa Powell will be our active coordinator of our “RRT” members as we develop this ministry.
3. Many of you have already responded to our weekly budget needs by taking or mailing your tithes and offerings to the church. Thank you so very much for your faithfulness. As a way to further facilitate and simplify your financial support to Grace, Nathan Reed will soon be sending to everyone instructions on how we might all contribute “on line” if you so desire. Look for further information from Nathan on this. It will be another way to stay faithful and connected to the Lord and Grace ministry during this challenging time.
One word of concern … Paul Phillips, Jackson, TN, father of Allen Phillips, passed through death into life on Monday, 03/16/2020. Visitation will be Friday, from 9 am – 11 am at George A Smith & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, 2812 North Highland Avenue, Jackson, TN 38305, with a service following at 11 am. As published in Paul’s obituary:
“The family recognizes the current health concerns sweeping our nation and understands the reluctance of some to attend events with crowds. Thus, they appreciate and honor the “social distancing” anyone feels necessary.”
I know you join me in praying for the comfort of the Holy Spirit to surround Paul’s family during this difficult time.
I close with one of my favorite verses: “…but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 New International Version).
Looking forward to flying…
